Willow Restaurant is once again putting its pop-up dinners to good use by donating a full 50% of profits from this meal to benefit Outgrowing Hunger, a non-profit that is focused on empowering recent immigrants and refugees to take control of their food supply. Through land grants and an extensive volunteer base, OGH is renting small garden plots to families at a steep discount, so that the recipients can a) grow their own food and b) begin to sell to local chefs and restaurants. We are particularly excited about this dinner because there is an opportunity for us to discover some really interesting, really unknown ingredients that are grown here in Portland. Fitting with our Cascadian-food model, if it grows here we can use; there is also potential that we will collaborate with some of the recipients of the OGH garden plots to create a dish or two for their forthcoming cookbook.
Jefferson Smith, former State Senator and candidate for Mayor, will be our Host for the evening. Bringing to light some of the more poignant success stories, Mr. Smith will help to sharpen the focus on OGH's vital, community based vision.
